Ameliorating the antitumor activity of lenalidomide using PLGA nanoparticles for the treatment of multiple myeloma BJPS
Karri,Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Reddy; Dhandapani,Nagasamy Venkatesh; Mannemala,Sai Sandeep; Radhakrishna,Kollipara; Mulukutla,Shashank; Sudunagunta,Dedeepya.
Abstract Lenalidomide (LND) is an anti-cancer drug and an effective derivative of thalidomide used for multiple myeloma therapy. Because of its poor solubility in water, LND is known to cause low oral bioavailability (below 33%), and as a direct consequence of this, the dosing frequency is extended thus increasing risk of toxicity. To improve its bioavailability and sustained release, the present study aims to formulate polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) for LND using [Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid)] (PLGA) as a polymer. The polymeric NPs were evaluated for particle size, SEM, XRD, drug content, entrapment efficiency (EE), in vitro release studies and in vivo bioavailability studies in rats. The formulated NPs possessed a size of 179±0.9 nm and a zeta potential...

Characterization of starch from different non-traditional sources and its application as coating in ‘Palmer’ mango fruit Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Rodrigues,Antonio Augusto Marques; Santos,Luana Ferreira dos; Costa,Rayssa Ribeiro da; Félix,Débora Tamara; Nascimento,José Henrique Bernardino; Lima,Maria Auxiliadora Coêlho de.
ABSTRACT Yam, cassava, jackfruit seed and mango seed kernel have potential for the extraction and use as starch in the food industry of starch or for the formulation of biodegradable coatings. As a biodegradable coating, starch can be applied in fruits characterized by a fast maturation, such as mango, which requires technologies to increase its shelf life. The aim of this study was to characterize starch from four non-traditional sources and to evaluate their potential as coating for ‘Palmer’ mango fruit. Starches used were extracted from cassava, mango seed kernel, jackfruit seed, and yam, and had their physical, optical, and chemical properties characterized for later use as coatings of ‘Palmer’ mango fruit. Fruits were coated with 3% cassava starch,...

Development of self-nanoemulsifying tablet (SNET) for bioavailability enhancement of sertraline BJPS
Rahman,Mohammad Akhlaquer; Mujahid,Mohammad.
Abstract The purpose of the study was to combine the advantages of self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery systems and tablets as a conventional dosage form. Self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDDS) was prepared to enhance the solubility and thus oral bioavailability of sertraline. Aqueous titration method was used to prepare the liquid SNEDDS; ternary phase diagrams were constructed and based on smaller droplet size (24.8 nm), minimum viscosity (153.63 cP) and polydispersity index (0.182), higher percentage transmittance (95%) and in vitro drug release (97%), an optimum system was designated. Liquid SNEDDS was transformed into free-flowing powder by solid adsorption technique followed by compression into tablets. In vitro release of sertraline from...

Effectiveness of phosphate fertilizers of diffrent water solubilities in relation to soil phophorus adsorption Scientia Agricola
Prochnow,Luís Ignácio; Quispe,Jack Fernando Santos; Francisco,Eros Artur Bohac; Braga,Graziela.
Phosphate fertilizers should match soil attributes to enhance agronomic effectiveness and recovery by plants. The purpose of this study was to test the agronomic effectiveness of P sources varying in water solubility on two soils differing widely in P adsorption capacity (PAC). Soils selected for the study were Oxisols with very low available P and presenting low and high PAC (Ox-LPAC and Ox-HPAC, respectively). Both were limed to pH 5.4 in a greenhouse study conducted utilizing corn as the test crop. Treatments consisted of the two soils interacting with five P sources (monocalcium phosphate - MCP, low-grade single superphosphate - LG-SSP, multimagnesium phosphate - MMP, Arad phosphate rock - PR and a P impurity in triple superphosphate - H14), and four...

Evaluating the discriminatory power of a dissolution assay for rosuvastatin calcium capsules: Solid-state properties and dissolution media BJPS
Ângelo,Marilene Lopes; Ruela,André Luís Morais; Ferreira,Anna Clara Marques; Ramos,Marcus Vinicus de Faria; Montanari,Cristina Martiniano; Silva,Lucélia Magalhães da; Araújo,Magali Benjamim de.
We propose to evaluate the dissolution properties of rosuvastatin calcium (ROSC) capsules in different media to characterize the discriminatory power of the assay method. Dissolution assays were performed in media with different pH, and including the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Several immediate-release formulations were manufactured using the commercial raw material characterized as amorphous solid. The hydrophobic adjutant magnesium stearate was employed in some formulations due to its negative effect in the wettability and dissolution efficacy of solid dosages. These formulations showed the lower dissolution efficacy values in media without surfactant; however, when SDS was added to the medium, the dissolution efficacy increased, and the...

Extractants to assess zinc phytoavailability in mineral fertilizer and industrial by-products Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Souza,Camila Prado Cenciani de; Abreu,Cleide Aparecida de; Andrade,Cristiano Alberto de; Abreu,Mônica Ferreira de.
Efficient analytical methods for the quantification of plant-available Zn contained in mineral fertilizers and industrial by-products are fundamental for the control and marketing of these inputs. In this sense, there are some doubts on the part of the scientific community as well as of the fertilizer production sector, whether the extractor requested by the government (Normative Instruction No. 28, called 2nd extractor), which is citric acid 2 % (2 % CA) (Brasil, 2007b), is effective in predicting the plant availability of Zn via mineral fertilizers and about the agronomic significance of the required minimal solubility of 60 % compared to the total content (HCl) (Brasil, 2007a). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the alternative extractors DTPA,...

Mineral composition and dry mass production of the corn plants in response to phosphorus sources and aluminum concentration BABT
Batista,Marcelo Augusto; Pintro,José Carlos; Costa,Antonio Carlos Saraiva da; Tormena,Cássio Antonio; Bonato,Carlos Moacir; Batista,Michelli Fernandes.
The corn plants were evaluated with different phosphate fertilizer sources and aluminum (Al) concentrations in a sandy substrate. A totally randomized experiment design was set up with two corn plants in the pots containing 2 kg of a sandy substrate, two phosphate sources (Triple Super Phosphate - TSP or Arad Phosphate - AP) and four Al concentrations. When Al concentrations increased, pH (CaCl2) substrate values decreased. There was an increase in the calcium and phosphorus contents in the sandy substrates that received the TSP and AP sources. The calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium concentrations of the corn plant's shoot were higher in the TSP than without P and AP sources. When the Al concentration increased, the concentration values of the...

Prednisone raw material characterization and formulation development BJPS
Toehwé,Leonardo Henrique; Prado,Livia Deris; Rocha,Helvécio Vinícius Antunes.
ABSTRACT Solid dosage forms for oral use, particularly tablets, are the most highly used dosage forms in therapy because they are easily administered, have high productivity and relatively low cost and provide a more stable drug to form a semi-solid net. Numerous parameters influence the quality of the final dosage form. In this study, the dissolution profile of 20-mg prednisone tablets bioequivalent to the reference product and three test formulations were evaluated using stability testing. During the study, prednisone tablets and the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) prednisone from two different manufacturers were characterized with respect to their physical and physicochemical properties. The results showed that the dissolution profiles of the...

Preparation and physicochemical characterization of meloxicam orally fast disintegration tablet using its solid dispersion BJPS
Shoormeij,Zahra; Taheri,Azade; Homayouni,Alireza.
ABSTRACT Meloxicam (MLX) is a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug that is prescribed in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. MLX is practically insoluble in water and exhibits a slow onset of action. In this study, MLX solid dispersions (MLX SDs) were prepared to improve the water solubility of this poorly water-soluble drug. Then orally disintegrating tablets (ODT) of MLX were developed using MLX SD to decrease the onset of action of this drug. MLX, poloxamer 188, and crospovidone of different ratios were melted in molten poloxamer 188 as a hydrophilic carrier. The optimum SD with the highest saturation solubility in water (13.09±0.34 microgram/mL) consisting of MLX: poloxamer 188: crospovidone in the ratio of 1:2:0 was used for the...

Solid-state solubilities of grain -growth inhibitors in WC-Co and WC-MC-Co hardmetals ArchiMer
Lauter, Lukas; Hochenauer, Roman; Buchegger, Christoph; Bohn, Marcel; Lengauer, Walter.
The solubilities of the most common grain -growth inhibitors (GGIs) Cr, V, Ta, Mo, Nb, Zr and certain combinations there of in the binder phase of WC-Co hardmetals as well as hardmetals of the type WCTiC-TiN-TaC-NbC-Co containing an fcc MC carbide (or carbonitride) phase "MC"("WC-MC-Co" hardmetals) were analysed by means of WDS-EPMA. The carbon potential of the binder phase was fixed at its highest and lowest maxima by the presence of either graphite or eta (M6C) phases. In case of low-carbon hardmetals the composition of M6C, and in the MC-containing hardmetals the composition of the MC phase, was analysed. Two types of solubilities were determined. The first type was measured after controlled cool-down from liquid-phase sintering temperature and...

Spray-dried tomato powder: reconstitution properties and colour BABT
Sousa,Alexandre Santos de; Borges,Soraia Vilela; Magalhães,Natália Ferreira; Ricardo,Hevandro Vaz; Azevedo,Aline Damico.
Powdered tomato was produced by spray drying the tomato pulp. A full 2³ factorial design with the central point was used, varying the feed flow rate (127-276 g/min), air inlet temperature (200-220ºC) and the atomisation speed (25,000-35,000 rpm). The responses analysed were: moisture content, solubility, wettability consistency and colour, but the factors only significantly affected the colour parameter. All the samples became significantly darker and less red with an increase of the variables under study. A low atomisation speed (25,000 rpm) and lower inlet air temperature (220ºC) produced the powders with a higher colour index (a/b) and less darkening.

Synthesis and physicochemical characterization of chemically modified chitosan by succinic anhydride BABT
Mello,Karine Gargioni Pereira Correa de; Bernusso,Leandra de Cássia; Pitombo,Ronaldo Nogueira de Moraes; Polakiewicz,Bronislaw.
The N-succinil-chitosan is a chemically modified derivative of the biopolymer chitosan. The succinic anhydride attached to the free amino groups presented along the chitosan's polymer chain imparts to the molecule different physicochemical properties not exhibited before the modification. These chemical modifications enhance chitosan's solubility in slightly acid, neutral and alkaline media. These properties are related to the long alkyl chains attached to hydrophilic parts. In this case the hydrophilic part of D-glucosamine promotes stronger interactions with the water molecules, and consequently, enhances the solubility of the chitosan polymer. Non-modified free chitosan is soluble only in acidic medium (pH < 5.5). These modifications made possible...

The improvement of anti-HER2 scFv soluble expression in Escherichia coli BJPS
Farshdari,Farzaneh; Ahmadzadeh,Maryam; Nematollahi,Leila; Mohit,Elham.
The relationship between the expression of HER2 and malignity of breast tumors has led to the generation of antibodies targeting HER2+ tumors. In addition, the expression of scFvs, as the smallest antigen-binding region of antibody containing two disulfide bonds in Escherichia coli often results in accumulating non-functional protein in the cytoplasm. A redox-modified strain of E. coli such as Origami (DE3) may facilitate the formation of proper disulfide bond in cytoplasm. The present study aimed to optimize the expression of anti-HER2 scFv in Origami and evaluate the influence of induction temperature, and host strain on the solubility of the protein. To this aim, chemicallysynthesized anti-HER2 scFv of Trastuzumab was cloned in pET-22b (+). The results...

The Liquisolid technique: an overview BJPS
Burra,Shashidher; Yamsani,Madhusudhanrao; Vobalaboina,Venkateswarlu.
A novel "Powder Solution Technology" involves absorption and adsorption efficiency which makes use of liquid medications, drug suspensions admixed with suitable carriers, coating materials and formulated into free flowing, dry looking, non adherent and compressible powder forms. Based upon a new mathematical model expression, improved flow characteristics and hardness of the formulation has been achieved by changing the proportion of Avicel ® PH 200 and Aerosil ® PH 200 from 50:1 ratio to 5:1 and in which the drug is dispersed in an almost molecularly state. Due to their significantly improved wetting properties a greater drug surface area is exposed to the dissolution media, resulting in an increased dissolution rate and bio availability. Thermodynamic study of the solubility of ibuprofen in acetone and dichloromethane BJPS
Aragón,Diana Marcela; Rosas,Jaiver Eduardo; Martínez,Fleming.
Thermodynamic functions, Gibbs energy, enthalpy and entropy for the solution processes of ibuprofen (IBP) in acetone and dichloromethane (DCM) were calculated from solubility values obtained at temperatures ranging from 293.15 K to 313.15 K. The respective thermodynamic functions for mixing and solvation processes as well as the activity coefficients for the solute were calculated. IBP solubility was high and proved similar in both solvents but was greater in DCM than acetone. In addition, the thermodynamic quantities for the transfer process of this drug from cyclohexane to the organic solvents were also calculated in order to estimate the contributions of hydrogen-bonds or of other dipolar interactions. The results were discussed in terms of...
